Easy May Crowning and DIY Crown for Mary, Mother of God

May is the month of Mary! Today, I will share a simple way to honor Mary this month with an easy May Crowning and DIY crown for Mary.

How can you celebrate the month of Mary?

You can celebrate the month of Mary by putting flowers by a Mary statue or a Mary picture. You can also draw or color a picture of Mary, and put it by your statue or hang it in your house. You can also have a May Crowning. Today, I will share an easy crown craft and how to have a simple May Crowning.

Fun craft for May – Make a crown for Mary

Mary is the Queen of Heaven, and queens wear crowns! You can make a crown for your Mary statue too.

Here are the instructions to make a crown for any Mary statue.

Supplies:

1 pink pipe cleaner

1 red pipe cleaner

scissors (make sure to ask an adult for help)

Instructions:

1. Take the pink pipe cleaner, and measure it to fit around your Mary statue’s head. Cut it to the right size, and twist the ends together to form a circle.

2. Cut the red or pink pipe cleaner in pieces that are 1 inch long. Wrap them around the brown piece like roses, and you are done!

Have a crowning of Mary in May and sing a Mary song

Take your crown of roses and sing a song to Mary while you crown your Mary statue. You can look at the ideas below for songs to sing to Mary. You can also sing your own favorite Marian hymns.

In my search I came upon the book Mary Foreshadowed, and knew this was where to begin. I opened the course with the Old Testament. We studied how Mary was truly foreshadowed by God before her birth. This time was so beautiful for me, I decided to keep the conversation going, and in a way that would hopefully benefit my own children in their love for Mary as they grow. Mary Foreshadowed is the basis of this work. May 1st – St. Joseph is a model for all Christians.  Here are a few good links about St. Joseph…  Here is a St. Joseph the Worker Chore Chart for younger kids. Finally, the Litany of St. Joseph is very special, and we are all encouraged to pray this litany.

Month of Mary

Month of Mary where Catholics throughout the world honor Mary during this month with various prayers and devotions (May Crowning, more frequent recitation of the Holy Rosary, a special prayer to Mary each day, etc.).

How to Plan a May Crowning

How to Plan a May Crowning gives some ideas among other sites. Two significant Marian Feast days in May are Our Lady of Fatima, May 13th, and May 31st, The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord

The Traditional Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord this year is on May 14 or 17th (in 2026) (was on May 20th in 2023) and (this feast has been transferred to the Sunday before Pentecost in most dioceses).  This is a great time to talk about Novenas because of the 9 days between the Ascension of Our Lord and eve of Pentecost. Pentecost

Although this Solemnity is 50 days after Easter and not always in May (but it often is), this year, it is May 24 (in 2026) (was on May 28th in 2023).  Celebrate this important day which is the Birthday of the Church.

Sts. Philip, James, and Matthias

3 Apostles are celebrated this month – Saints Philip and James on May 3rd and St. Matthias on May 14th.  The Apostles were chosen by Jesus as the first bishops to go out and proclaim and witness the Gospel.

 

Often Religious Education Programs have ended sometime in April and many of the great saints and liturgical celebrations of May are not able to be celebrated or reflected upon.  If you do have faith formation sessions, don’t miss the opportunity to share about these Feasts.  At the very least give ideas to parents to celebrate these special days of May!
