How to Use 8 of Our Favorite Holy Heroes Resources in Your Homeschool

Holy Heroes is one of the Catholic companies that I order from again and again. They have wonderful resources for teaching the Faith. Today, I am sharing 8 favorite Holy Heroes resources and how to use them in your homeschool. As a bonus, all of these are also included in this week Holy Heroes Homeschool sale! Read to the end to find out about this special sale for homeschoolers.

Favorite Resources for Teaching the Faith in your Homeschool

Catholic Name-It Game and Pope Edition Name-It

We love these games in our home. Our children as young as 3 years old have joined in on the fun on the Pope Edition! After playing these games, the entire family will learn to identify tons of important symbols of the Catholic Faith. Just so you are aware, there is some overlap in the pictures between the two games. I recommend starting with the Pope Edition if you have toddlers/lower elementary kids (older members love this one too!), and the Catholic version if you mostly have older kids.

How to use these in your homeschool: We use these as a reward for our children completing their main homeschool work. They get super motivated to complete all of their task if they know they will get to play Name-It! These are alsp great to play on a rainy day if we can’t go outside for recess, and the handy tin makes them easy to travel with to take on trips.

InQUIZisition: Q&A for the curious Catholic and the Catholic curious

This is a really fun book for learning about all sorts of fun and interesting facts about the Catholic Faith. It is divided into different topics by chapter, so you can either read it cover-to-cover, or go to a particular section that you would like to study.

How to use these in your homeschool: We usually read this when all other schoolwork is complete as a fun treat. This is probably best for upper elementary and older, and I think teens would even like to read it on their own. It’s also a fun rainy day activity after lunch, or fun to read at night together after night time prayers.

Confession Pack for Kids

These are great for children preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I tuck these into every First Communion Gift, and I have ordered my own kids tons of refills so that they can bring the Examination of Conscience with them and then shred it up after they receive the Sacrament. My Confession Book that comes in the pack is excellent for children to make their examination of conscience.

How to use these in your homeschool: Use this to help your children prepare to receive Reconciliation – either their first Reconciliation or at any age. The book is such a handy resource to have on hand. Use these resources with you Baltimore Catechism lessons on Confession and you are set.

Feast Day! Board Game

This game is super fun! We have all of the expansion packs and enjoy playing it often. Best for ages 4/5 and up (younger children will need someone to help read the cards to the other players), this is like the Catholic version of Candy Land. You journey through the liturgical year, starting at Advent, and answer liturgically-themed questions along the way.

How to use these in your homeschool: This is another great option for rainy day fun, or play it on actual feast days that your family celebrates! I think it would also be fun to use this at a co-op or homeschool group game day meet up.

Kids Mass Missal and Prayer Book

This is another great resource for your young ones preparing for First Holy Communion (ages 7 and up or independent readers). This is appropriate for kids when they grow out of the “little kids” missals, but may be too young to follow along in the “big people” missals (such as Magnificat or the missals that the church provides). One side is the Mass Missal with all of the important parts of the Mass. When you flip the book over, it becomes a prayer book with all of the basic Catholic prayers.

How to use these in your homeschool: Before taking these to Mass, go through each part of the Mass with your children using the book. You could split ut up and go through 1 part per day or even 1 part per week. It is essential to teach about Holy Mass especially before children receive First Holy Communion. This is also another great First Communion gift.

Participating at Holy Mass Coloring Book

This coloring book pairs great with the Missal/Prayer Book mentioned above. This goes into the different parts of the Mass is even greater detail and breaks it down really well for little ones.

How to use these in your homeschool: Use this during catechism lessons. Aim to color 1-2 pages per day and read/discuss them with your child. When the coloring book is complete, you can bring it to Mass for your child to follow along. I like having my kids under 7 bring this to Mass instead of the Mass Missal because it has more pictures and fewer words.

Glory Stories

These are some of the most awesome saint audiodramas that we have ever heard. They are professionally produced with beautiful music and voice actors, and there are over 30 to choose from. Here are some of our favorites:

How to use these in your homeschool: These are great to listen to on the saint’s feast day, during lunch time, or in the car. They are long-ish (20-30 mins), so they are especially great for long drives – maybe on the way to your co-op or a field trip. I love that the mp3 versions can be purchased and accessed instantly.

Very Young Catholic Books

I have not personally used these in our homeschool, but I thought they were worth mentioning for geography, history, or theology lessons. There are 19 volumes to choose from, and there are so many ways you can use this series to supplement your homeschool curriculum. They feature different Catholic children from all around the world, and show pictures and tell true stories of their cultures.

Lent Resources From Holy Heroes

It truly amazes me to see all of the Catholic resources that exist today for Catholic kids. Holy Heroes was one of the first companies that was recommended to me as a new mom 10 years ago, and I still consistently order activities and books from Holy Heroes for my kids today. We also love their free resources that they offer throughout the year. Today, I am sharing some Lent resources from Holy Heroes for your home and classroom.

Lenten Prayer and Sacrifice Card Set

This is such a beautiful idea for Lent to help kids remember to pray and sacrifice for others. The set includes 40 cards with sacred art. The idea is that each day of Lent, you choose a person to pray for and/or make sacrifices for. Then, you write them a card to let them know that you prayed and sacrificed them on that particular day of Lent. Our family plans to make a list of people for the 40 days. Then, each child will take turns writing and mailing the cards for each person.

Free Lent and Easter Calendar

Every set of 40 cards comes with a free Lent and Easter calendar (you can also purchase sets of these). We will be keeping track of our daily prayers and sacrifices to send out our cards. We can write the name of the person on each day on the calendar.

Stations of the Cross Posters

If you are looking for some nice Lent decor for your classroom, I recommend these Stations of the Cross posters. These posters match the pictures in their Stations of the Cross booklets. Holy Heroes also offers bundles of the posters, booklets, and a guided Stations of the Cross audio CD. We listen and pray with the CD every year in our home when we pray the Stations.

Free Lenten Adventure

We have signed up for the free Lenten Adventure in the past and loved it! I highly recommend this for families where the parents did not grow up observing the Liturgical seasons at home (like me!). Authentically living the Church seasons at home is one of the most important things we, as Catholic parents, can do to pass on the Faith to our kids.

The Lenten Adventure always has solid catechesis for kids to understand the different elements of Lent, and includes prayers and many other resources. They also offer Lenten Adventure Activity Books in case you would like to have the handouts on hand for each child to participate (rather than printing them off for free). Parishes, schools and co-ops can also request a quote to purchase these books in bulk and save money.

Make Your Own Paschal Candle Kit

This would be a great Lenten activity to do as a family. The kit comes with a beeswax candle and embellishments to make your own Paschal candle. Use this as a catechesis moment, and be sure to point out your parish’s Paschal candle which will be replaced on the Easter vigil. You will need a bit of glue, but everything else is included in the kit.

Rosary, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day Resources from Holy Heroes

October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary which makes it a great time to focus on this powerful devotion. We will also enter into the holy period of Hallowtide (All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day) at the end of the month and into November. I recently spoke with Clara Davison from Holy Heroes, and she kindly shared tons of resources for this prayerful season.

AC: Since October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, we would love to hear about your Rosary resources! Do you have any tips for families for starting and establishing a daily family Rosary? 
HH: Yes! I created a list of 21 Ways to Pray a Family Rosary with suggestions for how to keep the entire family engaged in your daily prayers!
AC: What Rosary resources do you have to help families and children pray the Rosary? Anything to help them keep track of the prayers?
HH: Family rosary is a beautiful practice, but can often feel impossible with young children! One of the biggest stressors for families is keeping small children engaged in the Rosay. We used input from hundreds of mothers to create our Bead by Bead Rosary books—a tool to teach children the story of the Rosary. In these books, every bead has a picture which helps children learn how to meditate on the story behind each Mystery of the Rosary. One mom emailed after receiving her books, saying, “my daughter sat for an entire decade–and I have never been able to get her to do that in the past”.
Starting the practice of a family Rosary can be tough, but engaging children’s imagination is a great way to help them understand this beautiful prayer!
AC: October 13th is the Anniversary of the spinning sun at Fatima. Do you have any resources for families and catechists to share the story of Our Lady of Fatima with children?
HH: Since Holy Heroes is all about bringing the joy of the faith to families, no feast day celebration is complete without listening to one of our audio dramas! This highly researched, accurate audio drama includes the real words of the Fatima Children and the real people who experienced this miracle–no made up characters!
One of the biggest themes we can take away from the Fatima Apparitions is that Heaven has a plan for your family. We created our Fatima Family Handbook to help families discover the plan that Our Lady laid out during her visits to the Fatima Children. Written for children and adults, these practical steps are laid out so that the entire family can respond to the requests from Our Lady. As a beautiful follow-up to the Children of Fatima audio drama, this book includes real photos, words, and the history of each visit that occurred between 1916 and 1917 (plus some bonus content when Our Lady and Jesus Himself appeared to Lucia decades later in the convent)!

All Saints Day and All Souls Day

AC: All Saints Day is one of my favorite feasts! What tips and resources do you have for celebrating All Saints Day in the home, group, or parish?

AC: We observe All Souls Day on November 2nd. It’s such an important day in our Church calendar. What resources and prayers can you share with us for observing All Souls Day?

HH: An often-forgotten, but significant feast is coming up–All Souls Day!

The Church asks us to pray for the poor souls in purgatory. This quote from the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us about our relationship through Christ with others that not even death can overcome:

“In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits others, well beyond the harm that the sin of one could cause others. Thus recourse to the communion of saints lets the contrite sinner be more promptly and efficaciously purified of the punishments for sin.” (1475)

While you can pray for the poor souls throughout the year, having a special day (with the plenary indulgence available for the first 8 days in November) is a way you can reiterate to your children the importance of continually praying for the dead.

AC: Last time we spoke, you mentioned a new Glory Story coming out this fall! Is there any news or update you can give us on that?
HH: Yes! We have announced that Glory Story Volume 20 is about SAINT Pier Giorgio Frassati! This Glory Story is over a decade in the making…we have just been waiting for his canonization! You can support the production of Glory Story Volume 20 HERE.
