Author, Colleen Pressprich and illustrator, Amy Heyse team up again for a new Lenten devotional for families called Lenten Prayer for Families! This devotional is beautiful, prayerful, and easy to use. It will cover you from Ash Wednesday, through all 40 days of Lent (as well as Sundays), and all the way through the Easter Octave. We have enjoyed many of Colleen Pressprich’s books in our home, and are happy to add this Lent-themed one to our collection.
The Format of this Book
This book can be immediately opened by mom or dad each day of Lent, and the daily devotion will take about 10 minutes (leave a little extra time in case the discussion gets deep!). Each day begins with a scripture, followed by a simple scripture breakdown, a prayer, and discussion questions for the entire family (“Conversation Starters”). No prep is needed, and I can picture a wide range of ages enjoying this book together. Amy Heyse’s illustrations that accompany each day are stunning. The Holy Week images are my favorite!
I love that the Easter Octave is included, as well as important feasts and solemnities so that you will get a lot of use out of this book. This book can be used every single year, again and again. It would be interesting to see how the family discussions change and deepen over time.
The book also incudes “Notes for Parents” in the back of the book with further explanations that are very helpful.
Scripture Memorization
This book also includes a weekly scripture verse to memorize as a family. I love this feature! These begin the week after Ash Wednesday, and match weekly themes throughout Lent. Each verse is about a line or two, and all of them are definitely ones that I would want my children to be familiar with.
A Simple Way for Families to Journey Through Lent Together
This book is great for families who want and simple and focused way to journey through Lent and Easter together. The one-page daily spreads make it manageable, and I am sure that fruitful conversations will come from reading the scripture passages and discussing them together. This would be a beautiful gift for new parents raising Catholic kids.
