This summer has been the summer of gardening in our home. We were inspired to expand our vegetable garden, and loved designing a special Mary garden for the month of May. We also planted many plants and herbs to harvest specifically for tea. My kids were thrilled with their first cups of fresh chamomile tea! I knew that Herbs that Heal by Judson Carroll and Steve Cunningham would be invaluable for us as we learn about home remedies, healing teas, and more.
What is Included in this Book
This book is not only beautiful to flip through and read, but it is laid out in a user friendly way to learn all about different helpful herbs and plants to grow and find. I particularly loved learning about the Catholic roots of herbal healing and medicinal plants. The book is separated into two organized parts: A History of Herbalism and Herbs for Common Ailments.
Some ailments included in the book are:
- sore throats
- colds and flu
- allergies
- cough and congestion
- fever
- earaches
- wounds
- headaches
- menstrual issues
Herbs that Heal is written by a very dynamic duo – Judson Carroll and Steve Cunningham. Judson Carroll is a master herbalist who learned how to grow and forage medicinal plants from his parents and grandparents. Steve Cunningham writes from the point of view of a “novice” herbalist – although his extensive knowledge after such a short amount of time is impressive! Mr. Carroll starts off each section with helpful information and background about each plant, and Mr. Cunningham adds any extra information or advice to fill in the picture, especially for those just getting into foraging and growing.
If you are just starting out, be sure to keep and pen and paper handy – you are going to be so inspired to start growing lots of plants at home! I appreicated the advice that both authors gave for times when they had less space to grow, and how they grow many of these plants in pots on a patio. The cool thing about gardening is that you can use what you have and still be very productive.
Who Would Enjoy this Book
Judson Carroll and Steve Cunningham are a great team explaining each plant from the point of view of an expert and a new herbalist. I read this book cover to cover very quickly and have a whole list of seeds for growingin our home garden next year.
This book is a lovely catalog for both seasoned and budding (puns intended!) herbalists. It is a wonderful resource to have on hand for anyone who is interested in learning how to heal certain ailments with the beautiful and bountiful plants that God provides for us right in our own backyards.
