Something Wicked: Why Feminism Can’t Be Fused with Christianity
by Carrie Gress, Ph.D.
Published by Sophia Institute Press
As a millennial, I have been exposed to the toxic lies of feminism for decades. It definitely had a brainwashing affect on my entire generation. We need a detox! Dr. Carrie Gress’, Something Wicked: Why Feminism Can’t Be Fused with Chrsitianity, is what we all need to read to understand the long history of this harmful movement. Dr. Gress’ book exposes all the lies that the past few generations have been told, and lies out how we can change our thinking and our actions to guide the society back to one that embraces the complimentary roles of male and female.
I have read a number of Dr. Gress books in the past, and was wondering if this one would be a repeat of her previous works (which were all wonderful!). I am pleased to say that it has a wealth of new information and does not repeat the information presented in her other books, but does complement them very well. If you have enjoyed Dr. Gress’ books in the past, you will love this new one where she clearly lays out why feminism and Christianity can never go together.
A Compelling and Informative Read
Dr. Gress always writes the most well-researched books, and this one is no exception. She dives into the history of the feminist movement which goes back to the 1800s (I had no idea it went back that far!) She sheds light on how feminists “piggy-backed” onto the abolition movement (and explains why this is not reasonable or honest for feminists to do), and how feminism evolved and became more troubling and dangerous as the years went on.
She explains what St. John Paul II meant about “New Feminism,” and she reveals how women calling themselves “Catholic feminists” have been mislead and must stop spreading this false ideology.
Humans are Meant to Worship
One of the most interesting sections of the book, in my opinion, was Part II entitled “The Shadow Church.” The most influential feminists in history did not practice Christianity, and, of course, since Jesus is a man, rejected following Him altogether. If people don’t worship God, they will worship something, and in this case, feminists have created a whole new religion to fulfill these desires. It is all quite sinister, and Dr. Gress lays out how feminists have created their own “religion” (complete with the sacrifice of babies via abortion) which many women continue to fall for and follow.
Feminism Changes the Brain
In the final section, Dr. Gress lays out how the “healthy restoration of womanhood” can be accomplished. I do believe that many people are waking up to the lies and brainwashing that feminism has relentlessly delivered for centuries. I learned in this final section that the brain is even changed and re-wired when feminist, anti-family, and anti-woman ideology creeps in. Instead of the right hemisphere of the brain leading the thinking, this “re-wiring” results in the left hemisphere taking the lead. This final section explains in detail the consequences of the left side trying to overtake the right.
The Church is the Antidote to Feminism
Finally, Dr. Gress explains how the only way to change the culture and bring down the harmful thinking of feminism and restore society is by embracing strong families – most importantly, turning to Holy Mother Church to lead, guide, and nurture us. It is no coincidence that feminists throughout history have not followed any religion, and certainly have not relied on God as the Father. This disordered behavior has led to a disordered society. Little by little, we can restore the home by restoring the family. We must continue to persevere and stay faithful to help build back what was broken in our society – one home and one family at a time.
Final Thoughts
This book is a crucial read for all Christians to understand why feminism and Christianity are incompatible. This was a fascinating, well-researched, and clearly laid out book that I highly recommend for all parents, grandparents, catechists, and anyone interested in how we can contribute positively to re-shape the landscape that feminism has wrecked and distorted.
