Alex Resch thinks that this picture book from Patrick O’Hearn would be perfect to have for the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels on October 2.
Angel of God: Devotion to the Guardian Angels for Children
by Patrick O’Hearn
Illustrated by Valerie Delgado
The Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels is October 2. Angels are all around us, guiding and protecting us. It is important to teach our children that they are never alone, and their very own guardian angel was given to them as a special gift from God! Angel of God: Devotion to the Guardian Angels for Children by Patrick O’Hearn is a beautiful book to teach children about the comfort and protection that their guardian angels can bring.
Learning About Angels
The book begins with a Foreward by Fr. Ambrose Criste, O. Praem. Don’t skip it! It gives an excellent summary on what the Church (especially the “Angelic Doctor,” St. Thomas Aquinas) teaches about angels. Did you know that every church, city, and country has its own guardian angel? The Introduction that follows also explains the theology of angels in Sacred Scripture and Church Tradition. You will also read about the 9 choirs of angels in this section.
Prayers, Symbols, and Scripture About Angels
The book is, for the most part, a beautiful devotional for children. There are many traditional and original prayers (by Father Criste) to our guardian angel throughout the book – even one for before Mass and before Confession. It is a similar format and style to Patrick O’Hearns other books. It also teaches them about angels along the way. Illustrator, Valerie Delgado, has included delightful images that are each a symbol for angels such as a lantern and a sword. There are also lovely illustrations to accompany each role (see below).
The book helps children meditate on the 7 roles of the guardian angels. They are listed in the table of contents of the book.
Warning for sensitive kids: There is a picture of a devil and angel on the “temptations page,” and it talks about the devil tempting us. It is not overly scary, but it’s definitely worth reviewing for sensitive kids, and discussing it beforehand if they are not familiar with the idea of the devil’s ability to lead us away from God.
Each role includes a:
- symbol for angels
- piece of artwork to meditate on and enjoy
- Scripture verse about the role
- meditation about the role (This is written from the point of view of the angel to the child offering gentle instruction and guidance – very sweet!)
- The Angel of God prayer in English and Latin
- a prayer also related to the particular role that the child is reading about

How Parents Can Use this Book
I think that children ages 4 and up would enjoy this book. Older children could use the book as a devotional or prayer book. Any time you are discussing angels with your children, you could use this book to guide the discussion. This would also be a beautiful book for your child to take to Adoration to look at. It would also be a nice guide for morning or night time prayer, or any time when you usually read a story (such as a bed time or nap time story). You could also memorize the Scripture verses to help your children write scripture on their hearts. I always sing or say the Angel of God prayer to my little ones before naps and bed time. I think that it definitely helps keep away scary thoughts and bad dreams.
This book would also be a lovely Baptism, birthday, First Communion, Easter, or Christmas gift for a child or Godchild.
How Catechists Can Use this Book
This would be a very sweet book to share with your religion classes, especially preschool and K through upper elementary. You can use it to supplement your lesson on angels. Or, you could begin each class by reading one of the roles after your usual prayers at the beginning of class. You could focus on the same role for 1 month or 1 week. This would also be great to pull out for the Feast of the Guardian Angels on October 2.
