Who is Jesus? Discovering Christ in the Gospels: A 12-Week Catholic Bible Study
by Meg Hunter-Kilmer
Published by Ave Maria Press
Reading the Bible and journaling about it is my favorite way to absorb the Word of God. I also love Bible studies that tie Scripture together with a particular theme or focus. Meg Hunter-Kilmer’s Bible studies check all these boxes for me, and she has a new one: Who is Jesus? Discovering Christ in the Gospels.
The Theme of this Bible Study
The theme of this Bible study is based off of the question that Jesus asks His disciples in Matthew 16:15:
“Who do you say that I am?”
This Bible study explores this theme with topics and Gospel passages such as:
- the wonder of Christ’s birth
- the power of Christ’s teachings
- the impact of Christ’s miracles
- the suffering of Christ’s Passion
- the glory of Christ’s Resurrection
The Format of this Bible Study
This Bible study is designed for 12 weeks of study as an individual or in a group. New readers of the Bible will be able to dive right into Scripture with this study. Even seasoned Bible readers will enjoy this study, and gather new insight. In the introduction, the author assures Bible newbies that this study is for them, and I completely agree.
Be sure to read the introduction which explains how to break up the Gospel readings and questions each week.
The book doubles as a guide and a workbook with space to record your reflections and inspirations. I love Bible studies like this that are all-in-one. It is more likely that I will persevere through the study if I only need one book (plus my Bible) to complete it.
The author also includes instructions for using this in a group in an easy-to-digest and helpful Small-Group Leader section.
The Weekly Readings
Each week includes 3-4 readings. Each reading includes the following:
- Scripture chapter and verse
- Things to Know: This section provides a brief summary of the key points of the Gospel passage
- Questions as You Read: Helpful questions to guide you through the reading
- Praying with the Word: A section to write a brief thought to return to in prayer throughout the week
Final Thoughts
This simple, yet impactful, guided Bible study of the Gospels would be a wonderful way to start a daily Bible-reading habit. I love all of the passages that the author chose and how she organized them in a chronological and accessible way. If you are looking for a Bible study to do on your own or with a group, I recommend Who is Jesus? Discovering Christ in the Gospels by Meg Hunter-Kilmer.
