Advent has so many fun and interesting saints and feast days! As we prepare for the birth of Our Savior, we can try to emulate our friends in heaven to help us along the way. We can look to them to learn how to be virtuous and holy. Today, I will share some simple ideas for celebrating the feast of St. Lucy on December 13th.

About St. Lucy
St. Lucy was a virgin and a martyr. She took her ill mother to the tomb of St. Agatha in hopes that her mother would be healed. St. Agatha appeared to St. Lucy and predicted her mother’s full recovery as well as St. Lucy’s martyrdom.
St. Lucy’s mother was healed, and St. Lucy suffered at the hands of a wicked man who wished to marry her. Since she had consecrated her virginity to Jesus Christ, he attempted to burn her at the stake. However, the fire did not harm her. Finally, she was stabbed with a sword and her martyr crown was received.
Other stories tell that the governor, Paschasius, threatened to have her eyes gouged out. St. Lucy is usually seen holding her two eyes on a plate or platter.
How to Celebrate the Feast
- Attend Mass and encourage students to attend.
- Choose one or more of the readings from Mass to discuss in class.
- Pray the Divine Office (or, part of it) with your students. The Divine Office linked will also have many ideas for appropriate hymns to play today.
- Talk about what virtues St. Lucy embodied. Some examples are faith, perseverance, fortitude, and courage. Discuss how you and your students could have these virtues in different scenarios.

- What difficulties or challenges did this saint face? How did he or she overcome them?
- How did the saint exhibit virtue in his or her life? How can we work to imitate this virtue?
- What else can this saint teach us about living a good life and how to grow closer to Christ?
The Concluding Prayer from the Divine Office (Office of Readings) on 12-13-25:
May the glorious intercession
of the Virgin and Martyr Saint Lucy
give us new heart, we pray, O Lord,
so that we may celebrate her heavenly birthday
in this present age and so behold things eternal.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
