Dorian Speed is a former classroom religion teacher who now volunteers as a parish catechist. A writer and web designer, she bravely attempts to homeschool her children and hopes she’s succeeding. She writes about faith, culture, and catechesis at Scrutinies, and is the new web editor for the Catholic literary magazine Dappled Things. You can read her reviews of books, DVD’s, music, and other Catholic media at Tiber River Catholic Reviews.
Dorian earned degrees in History, Economics, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Trinity University. After several years of teaching social studies at the middle school and high school level, she was “drafted” to become the religion department at a fledgling Catholic high school. Her experiences working with students in a wide variety of settings – catechetical and otherwise – have led her to share ideas with those who may be new to the challenges of religious education. She seeks to combine humor, diverse strategies for lesson planning, and a healthy dollop of the Holy Spirit in her work as a catechist.
She’s available for speaking engagements in the Houston and San Antonio areas, on topics including:
- How parishes can use social media to connect and evangelize
- How you can use multiple intelligences theory to reach out to a variety of students
- Clever twists on time-honored teaching strategies
- Liven up your classroom with art, music, and drama
- Walker Percy and other Catholic writers. Mostly Walker Percy. Biiiigggg Walker Percy fan.
You can follow Dorian on Twitter and Google+, where she tries to avoid writing about herself in the third person. Oh, and LinkedIn. Sure. Why not?
It has been alleged that she is part of the brain trust behind Korrektiv Press.
